Default Updating skins - what am I missing?

Hi all

New user here, I made my purchase yesterday afternoon, haven't heard anything back on my license yet but my credit card was successfully charged. While I wait, I'm trying to continue working on the demo version to prep it as much as possible, before activating it when I get the key patch.

If I make my own skin directory - even just by copying one of the existing directories and renaming it, with the exact same file permissions and ownership - then set that in the client.xml, it will not load no matter what I name it.

If I use one of the existing directories, the skin will load, but NONE of my JPEG files show in it, even if I completely clear all my browser's cache, cookies, etc. then restart the server and reconnect. That's even after I rename the relevant .swf files to .jpg files in the skin.xml file. Oh, and the only files I've tried to make JPEG versions of are the ones listed in the support documents with recommended dimensions. In every case, I used the exact recommended dimensions.

I'm beginning to think that modifying skins is just completely disabled in the demo to prevent people using it on their sites. Is that the case, or what am I missing and how do I get a skin modified to use JPEG files instead of SWF files?
