no task manager selection. need help

my AVG was telling me i had a virus in my windows32 folder and i deleted the file which AVG said contained the virus and ran a check on for viruses and found nothing. However, whenever i hit ctrl alt and delete it brings out task manager without the top and i can only stay in the processes menu. Can you plz tell me if i can dl anything to fix this. I felt taht I could repair it since I have the Win XP disk but dunno which option to pick between new installation or upgrade and if everythin will be overwritten. it was ppi.exe in the foror and plz help me out
