regions and scripting

hi all,
do u know if it's possible to create a region by scripting, something like:
createRegion("rectangle",width, height)

the problem with regions is that you have to create it with the editor. I want to have a region which have the size of my entire screen, but screen size depends on the configuration...
so, I would like to create it dynamically... and I can't find how to do...
Is it possible?
