retrieve variable from flash

i have two questions-

1.) i downloaded the "database" example & when i run the exe file, the data does not show until the 'next' button is clicked(the data should be loaded when the exe loads.)
why it is not so??

2) how do i retrieve a variable value from flash in the "initialize script"?
