User Levels of Moderated Chat

There are four kinds of users in a Moderated-Chat room:
  1. Admin(red) - Screens questions, and designate moderator and speaker for all rooms.
  2. Moderator(green) - Moderates chat by screening questions in the current room.
  3. Speaker(orange) - Give speech or answers questions.
  4. User(blue) - Asks question and reads responses.
By default, user types are distinguished by name color, shown below: "admin" in red bold is admin, "ordinary" in blue is regular user, "test" in green bold is moderator and "test1" in orange bold is speaker.

Four kinds of users have different power:

- In Moderated-Chat, both Admin and Moderator have the privilege to screen messages, approve messages by "passing it" or drop it by not "passing it". Both of them are entitled to enable or disable the moderate chat function.

The difference is that an Admin can moderate every room, while a Moderator can only moderate the current room which they are assigned to.

- Both Moderator and Admin can kick annoying users from the chat, while an Admin can ban or unban a username/ IP address in the Admin Panel.

a) Admin:

Admin is responsible for designating the Moderator and Speaker in the Admin Panel-> Room Panel, also for putting the room into moderated mode. An Admin can screen messages as well.

b) Moderator:

Questions posted by regular users are automatically sent to the Moderator and Admin in current room for review. They can choose to ignore it or pass it to the public screen.

c) Speaker:

A guest Speaker can answer questions forwarded by Moderator.
The Speaker can also be left blank, meaning there is no Speaker in a room. Instead, a Moderator or Admin might answer questions.
(Only a registered user can be a Speaker while an unregistered guest can't.)

Speaker's rights:

  1. Everything the Speaker types goes straightly to the public chat room.
  2. Comments or questions from participants won't be delivered to the Speaker unless an Admin or Moderator passes it. This means Speakers won't be bombarded with inappropriate messages, allowing the chat to be carefully controlled.
  3. Ordinary users can't activate private chat with a Speaker, only an Admin and Moderator can do so.
  4. Ordinary users can't ignore either a Speaker, Moderator or Admin.

Communication Model of Moderated-Chat

Once Moderated-Chat is activated in a room, everybody in current room will be notified with the message "Moderator activated Moderated-Chat function." After that, newcomer to the room will be informed with the message "This is a Moderated-Chat, your message won't appear in the chat window until the Moderator pass it."

Once Moderated Chat is activated, ordinary users may no longer submit messages directly to the chat lobby. Below messages from ordinary users, a checkbox will appear labeled "Pass this message".

The Admin or Moderator then filters the questions, selecting those most relevant to the chat, clicking the checkbox to forward them to the guest Speaker as well as everybody in current room.

Shown below:

The Speaker answers messages being forwarded to him/her in chat lobby. Everybody can read their answer.

The diagram below shows how the whole process works:

Moderated Chat can be easily activated or deactivated with a click of the button at any time throughout the conversation. All rooms are set to "pass all messages" as default, meaning Moderated Chat is turned off at the beginning of each conversation. To enable Moderated Chat for one room, please click the disabled crown icon at the middle menu to turn on the Moderate Chat Mode.

To turn off Moderated-Chat mode, just click the shining crown icon again and everybody in current room will get a message: "Moderator disabled Moderated Chat function, you can free chat now."

Configuration of Moderated-Chat

Admin can configure Moderated Chat room settings in Admin Panel-> Room Panel, like this:

Large-scale moderated events may require multiple Moderators, as well as multiple Speakers. An Admin can define multiple Moderators and multiple Speakers, delimitated by",", like: mod1,mod2,mod3. There's no empty space after the comma.
